A poorly levelled base
The most frequent cause of sinking or hollow-sounding floors is an uneven or poorly prepared subfloor beneath the underlay.
Humidity affecting the boards or underlay
Moisture can compress or deform the underlay unevenly, creating soft spots and creaking that follow the humid areas.
Insufficient expansion gap
When the perimeter gap left for the wood to move is too small, boards push against each other and against the walls, causing creaking and, over time, bulging.
