Types of Parquet and Wood Flooring: A Guide to Choosing the Right One

Solid, engineered, mosaic, herringbone, laminate and vinyl: what each type of parquet and wood flooring is, how much it withstands, where to use it and whether it can be sanded.

Solid parquet

Single-layer solid wood pieces. The most durable type: it can be sanded and varnished many times and is glued or nailed down. It needs a dry, stable base and costs more than the rest.

Engineered parquet and flooring

A noble layer of natural wood over a core of cross-laid layers. It is more stable against changes in humidity and temperature, works well with underfloor heating and can be sanded once or several times depending on the thickness of the wood layer.

Mosaic, herringbone, laminate and vinyl

Mosaic is small pieces of wood in a regular pattern, typical of older flats and easy to recover by sanding. Herringbone is rectangular pieces laid in a zigzag. Laminate and vinyl/SPC floors imitate wood at a lower price and cannot be sanded.
