The sanding phase
Sanding in three or four passes with progressively finer grit usually takes from half a day to two days depending on the surface area and the state of the wood.
Drying between coats
Each coat of varnish needs several hours to dry before the next one can be applied, which is why the full process rarely fits into a single day.
Total time for an average home
For an average flat, the complete sanding and varnishing process, including drying, usually takes between three and six days depending on the number of rooms and the finish chosen.
